New Zealand does not join UN initiative for oversight of advanced AI
At the UN General Assembly, 20 countries (including Australia and Canada) called for increased oversight of advanced AI systems. New Zealand, the US, and China did not join; New Zealand Prime Minister Luxon favors opportunities and regulation without new laws.
Companies operating in New Zealand currently face no new statutory AI obligations, as the government has chosen an approach without new legislation; this reduces short-term compliance requirements, but also means less legal certainty going forward, especially if policy shifts after a possible change of government toward the opposition's proposal to establish an Office of AI.
