Microsoft introduced Copilot for Legal, which adds more than 20 legal AI skills and plugins to Microsoft 365. According to the company, it supports contract drafting and review as well as the preparation of legal analyses.

Microsoft introduced Copilot for Legal on 15 October, with more than 20 legal AI skills and plugins integrated directly into Microsoft 365. The product builds on Legal Agent, a tool the company introduced in April.

According to Microsoft, the new capabilities support extensive work with documents in Word. In Copilot, lawyers can assign tasks involving contracts, emails, meetings and files. The company says it supports drafting contracts and legal opinions, reviewing and negotiating contracts, and turning analyses into structured recommendations.

What changed

Why it matters

Integrating legal features into the office software already in use may influence the choice of tool. According to Michael McCready, owner of the law firm McCready Law, the presence of tools from Microsoft in established workflows is a competitive advantage; this is his assessment, rather than a substantiated comparison of quality.
