OpenAI reports payment failures for Brex and US business Mastercard cards on the API

clearly official source

OpenAI has recorded an increased rate of declined payments on some US business Mastercard cards, including Brex cards. For API customers this can block both automatic top-up and one-time credit purchases, and once the balance runs out, it can interrupt API requests.

OpenAI announced on its service status page (OpenAI Status) an increased failure rate for payments on some US business Mastercard cards, including some Brex cards. The incident has the status "Identified"/"Investigating".

For API customers, the company says the issue may prevent both automatic top-up of the prepaid balance and one-time credit purchases. If the prepaid balance runs out, API requests may fail.

OpenAI recommends that users of these cards add a card from a different issuer before their next scheduled payment, even if a payment has not yet been declined. If a credit purchase has already failed, it recommends trying the purchase again with a new card. The company stated that it is working with its payment partners on a fix and will post updates.

What changed

Why it matters

For developers and companies that pay for the OpenAI API with Brex or US business Mastercard cards, there is a risk of API request outages the moment the prepaid balance runs out and the automatic top-up fails. This is an operational risk for any application or product that depends on the OpenAI API, not an issue with the quality or availability of the models themselves.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

If a developer pays for their OpenAI API access with a Brex or US business Mastercard card, they risk an API outage without intervention due to an unreplenished prepaid balance.

What to do If you use a Brex or US business Mastercard card to pay for the OpenAI API, add a backup card from a different issuer to your account.

02

For a business

Companies whose OpenAI API payments are linked to Brex or a US business Mastercard risk disruption to the operation of applications that depend on the API if the automatic balance top-up fails.
