Google and XREAL have introduced XREAL AURA wired glasses running Android XR. According to Google, the Gemini assistant can also work with content on a mirrored laptop screen. Orders are opening in selected markets, with prices starting at 1 099 USD.

Google and XREAL have introduced XREAL AURA glasses, which Google describes as the first wired glasses running Android XR. The transparent lenses let users see their surroundings while displaying apps within a field of view spanning 70 degrees. The glasses themselves weigh less than 95 grams; computing is handled by a portable unit connected by a cable, which contains the battery and the Snapdragon Reality Elite platform.

Users can arrange multiple windows around them, connect a keyboard and mouse via Bluetooth, or use the computing unit as a trackpad. Wired Mirroring lets users display their laptop screen alongside Android XR apps via USB-C with video output support, without installing additional software. According to Google, the Gemini assistant can help with the content of these windows, including the laptop screen, and highlight areas on the screen and in the surroundings when users share their view.

Orders are open to users aged 18 and over in the USA, Canada and South Korea; in Japan, they are due to open on 2 November. The introductory price starts at 1 099 USD and applies until the end of the year. Deliveries are expected to begin in mid-November.

What changed

Why it matters

The glasses let users combine a portable workspace with assistance based on the content currently displayed, including work on a connected laptop. Practical use on the go is affected by the need for a wired connection to the computing unit and availability limited to the announced markets.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

When working on the go, you can extend your laptop screen with additional virtual windows and, according to Google, also use the Gemini assistant to ask questions about content on your laptop.

What to do Before purchasing, check whether the USB-C port on your laptop supports the video output required for Wired Mirroring.
