Spotify says it removed more than 50 million tracks from recommendations
According to Spotify, more than 50 million tracks identified as low-quality AI-generated content or spam were removed from recommendations over the past year. The company also reports a significant decline in listener complaints about this content in recommendations.
Spotify announced that over the past year it removed more than 50 million tracks from recommendations after identifying them as low-quality AI-generated content or spam. According to the company, listener complaints about the presence of such content fell significantly following changes to the recommendation system. The reported figure therefore does not include only AI-generated music.
According to Spotify, suspicious content is identified using a combination of listener behavior and feedback, track upload patterns, metadata and third-party AI detection tools. The company says editors apply the same standard when selecting music.
The rules include the AI Persona label for artistic identities created using AI that do not represent a real person. The label concerns the public identity of the artist, rather than how the music was made; the service has not introduced mandatory labeling of all AI-generated tracks. By default, the service does not include music from these profiles in editorial or algorithmic recommendations. An exception applies to personal recommendations if the listener follows the profile. Artists can opt into the label and appeal if it is assigned incorrectly.
Why it matters
The rules affect what music listeners discover and which artists gain reach through recommendations. The AI Persona label helps distinguish the public identity of an artist, but does not itself indicate whether AI was used to create a particular track. The reported improvement in recommendations is based on statements from Spotify.

Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
By following an AI Persona profile, a listener can explicitly express interest in its music and allow that music to be included in their personal recommendations.
For a business
For record labels and teams representing artists, the AI Persona label affects promotion: it limits discovery of their music through editorial and algorithmic recommendations.
