OKA has started selling Mori, a robotic lamp intended to serve as an interactive companion at home. According to the company, it tracks people's movements, responds to music and images on the TV, changes colours and offers breathing exercises or nature sounds. It is supposed to assess the context of the room using a camera, microphones and several large language models running directly on the device to identify the right moment to interact.

Founder's Edition costs 649 USD and includes a two-year warranty and two years of subscription access. Initial stock of this edition is limited to a few hundred units. The standard edition costs 799 USD and does not include a subscription. Breathing exercises are available without a subscription; nature sounds require one.

According to the company, video and audio are processed locally, and the original recordings are then deleted. Facial feature data is supposed to remain encrypted on the device; according to the director, the internet connection is used only for firmware updates. The camera turns off when the movable section retracts into the lamp, while the microphone turns off when the top of the lamp is double-tapped. The device has a battery. It does not offer voice control of smart home devices, play music on command or answer questions about the weather.

What changed

Why it matters

For those interested in a robotic companion for the home, this is a device already on sale. Its current uses centre on responding to its surroundings and providing relaxation activities; it cannot perform typical voice assistant tasks. When choosing, the intended use and the difference between free features and subscription content therefore matter.

What this means

01

For individuals

You can use breathing exercises without a subscription, but a subscription is required to listen to nature sounds. Your choice of edition therefore also affects access to content after purchase.

What to do Before buying, compare what the two editions include based on whether you want to use nature sounds through a subscription.
