Netflix introduces AI Discover tab with recommendations based on mood, time, and trends
Netflix is launching a new AI Discover tab in its TV app with thematic content recommendations (based on mood, time available to watch, and trends). The rollout starts in the US for the English-language interface on supported TVs, with wider deployment expected in the coming weeks.
Netflix announced on Tuesday a new "AI Discover" tab in its TV app, where it will gradually test experimental features for finding content. The first of these offers recommendations based on a selected topic – users can choose from categories such as "Something Light," "Family Movie Night," "Quick Watches," or "Scare Me" depending on their mood, the amount of time available to watch, or current trends. After selecting a topic, the system displays matching titles, and each one features a "Tune Your Recommendations" button that lets users save a recommendation or exclude it from future suggestions.
According to Netflix, the feature is powered by a new "intelligence layer" that responds to user feedback in real time and continues to learn. The tab appears in the top menu as a "Discover" button with a red icon and a "New" label. Netflix describes AI Discover as its "testing kitchen," where it will decide, based on user reactions, which features to further develop and bring into the app's main interface.
The rollout is currently proceeding gradually in the US for users with an English-language interface on supported TVs, and the company plans to expand to more users in the coming weeks. The Verge notes in connection with the announcement that it comes shortly after Netflix laid off approximately 1000 employees during a period of slowed growth and, according to available information, declining viewership of the service.
Why it matters
For regular users of the streaming service, this is an alternative to endless scrolling – selecting a topic based on mood or available time is meant to speed up finding a suitable title. For the streaming and media services industry, this is an example of how a company tests AI personalization on a limited sample of users before full deployment, in the context of recent layoffs and slowed subscriber growth according to available reports.
