Meta buys startup Conductor to strengthen its developer AI tools
Meta has bought the startup Conductor, which allows controlling multiple AI coding agents in parallel. Conductor Cloud is shutting down on 20 November 2026. Meta is thus strengthening its developer AI products as part of a broader trend of developer lock-in.
Meta has bought the startup Conductor, which was founded in 2024 and lets developers control multiple AI coding agents at once in separate cloud or local workspaces. The acquisition was announced by founder and CEO Charlie Holtz; the purchase price was not disclosed. Holtz promises a new interface for users in early 2027.
The Conductor platform allows agents from major AI labs (Anthropic, OpenAI) to work on separate parts of a project. The Conductor Cloud service is shutting down on 20 November 2026 and user data will be deleted; the desktop app will keep working, but will stop accepting new models in early 2027.
Meta is strengthening its developer AI products: in August it launched Muse Code (its own coding agent) and recently reported that Muse agents surpassed 10 million users. The acquisition of the Conductor startup is part of Meta's broader strategy to strengthen its position in the developer tools segment.
This acquisition is part of a trend in which major AI companies are buying up developer tooling. Anthropic acquired Stainless in May, OpenAI plans to acquire the company Pierre Computer, and SpaceX closed the acquisition of Cursor for $60 billion in August. The strategic goal of all these companies is the same: to make their developer platforms hard to switch away from.
Why it matters
For developers, the Conductor Cloud shutdown by 20 November 2026 is a forced migration – data and projects must be moved to another platform. For businesses, this is part of a trend where major AI players acquire developer tools as a strategic weapon: once a developer picks a tool, it becomes hard to leave. For Meta, it is a concrete step toward strengthening its position against Anthropic (with its Claude Code product) and OpenAI.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Developers working with Conductor Cloud must back up or migrate their data by 20 November; the desktop app will keep working, but from early 2027 it will stop accepting new agent models.
For a business
Meta is strengthening its position in the developer AI products segment by acquiring a platform for parallel management of AI agents; the Conductor Cloud shutdown creates migration pressure. As a trend, this is a developer lock-in strategy used by all major AI companies.
