Implementing EN 18286:2026 establishes a presumption of conformity with some AI Act requirements

clearly official source

The European Commission has published a reference to the harmonised standard EN 18286:2026. Implementing it gives providers of high-risk AI systems a presumption of conformity with the requirements of Article 17 of the AI Act covered by the standard.

The European Commission has published a reference to the harmonised standard EN 18286:2026 in the Official Journal of the EU through Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/2274. Providers of high-risk AI systems that implement the standard benefit from a presumption of conformity with the requirements of Article 17 of the AI Act covered by the standard. This article governs the quality management system.

The standard was developed by CEN and CENELEC. It is structured around the AI system lifecycle and can be integrated into an existing quality management system, for example one based on ISO/IEC 42001, ISO 9001 or the sector-specific standard ISO 13485. Providers can also use the standard to build their first quality management system.

The European Commission lists December 2027 and August 2028 as the dates when the requirements for high-risk AI systems will apply. It expects further harmonised standards to be published.

What changed

Why it matters

Providers of high-risk AI systems now have a specific standard for developing a quality management system, with the legal effect of a presumption of conformity within the scope covered. The option to integrate it into an existing system is particularly useful for regulated sectors, where it allows providers to use established quality management procedures.
