IEEE releases a paid AI assistant for searching scientific literature
IEEE has made IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite available as a paid add-on for institutional subscribers. The tool enables conversational search across millions of full-text scientific publications and selected metadata.
IEEE has released IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite as an optional paid add-on for all institutional subscribers to IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The tool lets users search scientific literature using natural-language questions. The library includes standards, scholarly journals and conference proceedings, among other materials.
Search is limited to millions of full-text peer-reviewed documents and a curated collection of metadata from STEM fields. According to IEEE, the tool is designed to notify users when it cannot find relevant supporting material rather than generate an unsupported answer. This is a stated safeguard against fabricated answers.
According to the article, more than 3 000 testers, including engineers, scientists and library staff, provided feedback during development. IEEE says its internal tests showed a threefold improvement in the quality and accuracy of results when using full texts.
Why it matters
Researchers can formulate questions in natural language and draw on the full content of publications when searching for scholarly material. However, the scope of the answers is limited by the collection being searched; the stated safeguard against unsupported answers is not a proven guarantee of error-free results.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
If your institution subscribes to the add-on, you can ask subject-specific questions in everyday language when researching literature, instead of constructing queries solely from keywords.
For a business
Institutions need to treat access to the assistant as an additional library subscription expense. The key consideration when deciding whether to purchase it is whether publication coverage meets the needs of their research teams.
