GitHub has made repository default extensions and enterprise management generally available for GitHub Copilot
Trusted repositories can automatically install and enable default extensions for GitHub Copilot contributors. Enterprises can require or block extensions and restrict installation to approved marketplaces. Enterprise policies take precedence over personal preferences.
GitHub announced the general availability of repository default extensions and enterprise management of those extensions in VS Code, Copilot CLI and the GitHub Copilot app. Administrators of trusted repositories can specify marketplaces and default extensions that are automatically installed and enabled for contributors. Contributors can disable them if policies permit.
Enterprise administrators can specify approved marketplaces, require particular extensions or block them. Required extensions are automatically installed and enabled, and users cannot disable them. Enterprise settings take precedence over both repository settings and personal preferences.
Repository defaults are available to individual GitHub Copilot users as well as users with a Copilot Business or Copilot Enterprise license. Enterprise management requires GitHub Enterprise Cloud and Copilot Business or Copilot Enterprise licenses issued by the enterprise or one of its organizations.
Why it matters
A repository administrator can prepare a shared set of extensions for contributors, so each contributor does not have to repeat the setup individually. Enterprise management also makes it possible to centrally determine which extensions employees may or must use.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
When you work in a trusted repository, its default extensions may be automatically installed and enabled for you. Whether you can disable them depends on the applicable policies.
For a business
A company can standardize required extensions and approved marketplaces across users. The scope of this control depends on GitHub Enterprise Cloud and on who issued the licenses to users.
