GitHub Enterprise subscriptions now include access to GitHub Copilot, with AI usage billed separately
GitHub includes access to GitHub Copilot in the GitHub Enterprise subscription for companies served by a sales team. AI usage is billed from the first request. Copilot Standalone costs 10 USD per user per month.
GitHub now offers access to GitHub Copilot for every GitHub Enterprise license holder at companies served by the sales team at GitHub or Microsoft. Availability through self-service signup is expected to roll out gradually; existing self-service subscriptions remain unchanged. Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise remain available.
Company account users without a GitHub Enterprise license can get the same access through Copilot Standalone at 10 USD per user per month. According to GitHub, both new options have the same features and models as Copilot Enterprise but do not include monthly AI credits per user. AI usage is charged against the company budget from the first request, using existing rules, alerts and cost allocation.
Why it matters
Included access does not mean included AI usage: costs accrue from the first request, even with occasional use. For larger deployments, management shifts from counting separately paid GitHub Copilot licenses primarily to monitoring usage and the company budget.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
A GitHub Enterprise license holder at a participating company can gain access to GitHub Copilot through their subscription; however, usage draws on the company budget from the first request.
For a business
When planning costs, companies must distinguish access to the service from AI usage. Users without a GitHub Enterprise license also require Copilot Standalone at 10 USD per person per month, which likewise does not include AI credits.
