GitHub ended support for six models in most GitHub Copilot environments on 19 October 2026. The change covers Copilot Chat, inline code edits, ask and agent modes, and code completion. GitHub announced the end of support on 18 September 2026.
According to GitHub, the recommended replacement for Gemini 3.7 Flash is Gemini 3.8 Flash. GPT-6.1 Sol is the recommended replacement for GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4, while GPT-6 Luna is the recommended replacement for GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5 mini. For Grok 4.5, GitHub recommends Grok 4.7.
GitHub urges users to update their workflows and integrations. Copilot Enterprise administrators may need to enable alternative models through policies in the settings. Once enabled, the relevant model will appear in the Copilot Chat model picker in VS Code and on github.com. Removing the retired models requires no user action.
Why it matters
The change affects several ways of working with code, so checking which models are in use matters beyond chat alone. The recommended replacements provide a migration path, but the source does not establish equivalent behavior or performance on specific tasks.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Anyone who used one of the retired models must select a supported model to continue working in the affected environments.
For a business
For companies, the transition may require coordinating changes to integrations and access policy management: the recommended replacement may not be available to Copilot Enterprise users without administrator approval.
