GitHub Copilot makes image generation and editing available in public preview
GitHub Copilot now lets users generate and edit images directly in a conversation and save them to a project. The public preview is available on four paid plans; image tokens are billed separately and draw on the plan's AI credits.
GitHub has made image generation and editing through natural language available directly in GitHub Copilot. The feature is available in public preview for Copilot Pro, Copilot Pro+, Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise plans. It can be used through VS Code, the GitHub Copilot app or Copilot CLI.
When an image is requested, the selected reasoning model calls a specialized tool that uses GPT Image 2.5 Flare. The result appears directly in the conversation and is saved to the project. Image generation is billed separately from the chat model based on image tokens, which draw on the AI credits of the relevant plan.
Why it matters
You can stay in the same conversation when creating visual assets for a project. According to GitHub, this removes the need to switch to a separate tool, enter the request again and manually transfer the result.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
If you use one of the supported plans, you can request image creation or editing directly while working on a project and get the result in that project.
For a business
Image creation adds separately billed usage to business use of GitHub Copilot, drawing on the plan's AI credits. The budget therefore needs to account for image tokens as well.
