GitHub Copilot lets users run agents on a remote computer from VS Code
The Agents window in VS Code supports running agents on a remote computer via Remote SSH or dev tunnels. According to GitHub, tasks can continue after the local editor is closed, provided the remote computer and its Agent Host remain running.
GitHub announced that GitHub Copilot allows users to launch agents on a separate remote computer from the Agents window in VS Code. The connection uses Remote SSH or dev tunnels. The agent works with the code, tools and dependencies in the remote environment, while the user can use their main development computer for other work.
According to GitHub, a remote agent can continue running after the local VS Code editor is disconnected or closed. This requires both the remote computer and its Agent Host to remain running. The task can therefore continue only while the remote environment remains operational.
Why it matters
Developers can run an agent independently of the computer they are currently working on. This allows the task to continue after the local editor is closed and use the tools and dependencies available on the remote machine.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
While working on another task, you can leave the agent running on a separate computer and close the local editor.
For a business
Running remote agents requires development infrastructure to remain available: the remote computer and its Agent Host must remain running while the agent works.
