GitHub app for Microsoft Teams brings together notifications and GitHub Copilot features
The unified GitHub app for Microsoft Teams combines notifications with GitHub Copilot features. Users of the existing GitHub notifications app only need to update it; users of the original app must switch to the unified version before the original app is retired on 16 November.
GitHub has released a unified GitHub app for Microsoft Teams that combines notifications with GitHub Copilot features. Notifications work in channels, group chats and private chats. The features can be invoked by mentioning @GitHub and then following the on-screen instructions to connect a GitHub account and select a repository.
The unified app was previously called GitHub notifications. Existing users can switch by updating to the latest version, while retaining notification features. Users of the original GitHub app must install the unified app to continue using GitHub Copilot features in Microsoft Teams. The original app will be renamed GitHub (deprecated) and retired on 16 November.
Why it matters
Developers can follow up on notifications by using GitHub Copilot features directly in the same conversation. The steps required to switch depend on the app currently in use: some users only need an update, while others need to install the unified version.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
After connecting your account and selecting a repository, you can invoke GitHub Copilot features by mentioning @GitHub directly in a Microsoft Teams conversation.
For a business
Teams using the original app must switch before it is retired on 16 November to retain access to GitHub Copilot features in Microsoft Teams.
