Default policy for GitHub Copilot features takes effect gradually

only one source so far updated October 22, 2026

From 22 to 26 October, GitHub is gradually applying the global default policy to the Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise plans. Eligible features and supported client capabilities without individual settings will follow this policy; the time it takes effect varies across organizations.

GitHub announced that it would gradually apply the global default policy for GitHub Copilot from 22 to 26 October. The change affects the Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise plans and may take effect at different times across enterprises and organizations. Eligible settings that administrators have not yet configured will inherit the global policy.

The policy was announced in September with a 28-day window during which administrators could configure it without immediately affecting user access. It applies to eligible generally available features and supported client capabilities. The current announcement lists settings in the “Features & clients” and “MCP servers in Copilot” sections; the original announcement explicitly also included the Copilot Code Review policy on the “Agents” page.

Administrators can check the global setting under AI Controls → Copilot → Default policy for new features and explicitly configure individual features at any time. Details on eligibility and exceptions are available in the source article.

What changed

Why it matters

Leaving an eligible feature without an individual setting now means it will inherit the global policy. Administrators therefore need to know which default setting the organization uses and which features require a separate decision. During the rollout, they must account for differences in when the policy takes effect through 26 October.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

If your organization has left an eligible feature without an individual setting, the global organization policy may now determine its availability when you use GitHub Copilot.

02

For a business

Company-wide access management for features, clients and MCP servers is getting a shared default rule. Unconfigured items will inherit it, so a decision at the global level will affect several parts of the company configuration.
