Copilot usage metrics API now breaks down usage by client tool
GitHub has expanded the Copilot usage metrics API with breakdowns of requests, sessions, and token consumption by tool, including OpenCode. The totals_by_client field is available in one-day and 28-day reports for organizations, enterprises, and their users.
GitHub has added the totals_by_client field to the Copilot usage metrics API, breaking down model usage by client tool. It also covers usage from tools such as OpenCode that previous reports did not capture. The new field is available in one-day and 28-day reports at the enterprise and organization levels, as well as for individual users within those entities.
Each entry contains the number of successful model requests, the number of distinct sessions, input and output token consumption, and the average number of tokens per request. Requests and tokens can be further broken down by model and how it was selected: directly by the user, automatically, or by the product. Unrecognized client tools are grouped under the value other.
Access requires the View Copilot Metrics permission and the Copilot usage metrics policy to be enabled. The request_count field counts model calls; a single user request can trigger several such calls. The classification of a client tool does not verify its identity. The report measures model usage, while activity tracked separately for agent applications counts tasks started.
Why it matters
Administrators can include tools outside the IDE that do not send editor telemetry when evaluating Copilot usage. The breakdown allows them to compare request and token volumes across tools; however, call counts alone cannot be directly compared with the number of user requests.

What this means
For a business
Teams responsible for support and policies governing the use of development tools gain data on actual usage through Copilot, including outside the IDE. They can use this data to decide which client tools to support within the company.
