AWS makes GPT models available through Amazon Bedrock from Canadian regions

only one source so far

GPT-5.6, GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 Sol models are available through Amazon Bedrock from the Canada (Central) and Canada West (Calgary) regions. Requests are routed through cross-Region inference; the selected profile determines where processing can take place.

AWS has made GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra, GPT-5.6 Luna, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna and GPT-6.1 Sol available through cross-Region inference in Amazon Bedrock. Access is available from the Canada (Central) and Canada West (Calgary) regions. The application sends requests to the source region, and the service automatically routes them to a supported target region.

The geographic profile with the us. prefix restricts processing to Canada and the USA. The global profile allows routing to supported commercial AWS regions, so a Canadian entry region alone does not guarantee processing in Canada or North America. For GPT-5.6 models, the global profile is available only from Canada (Central); access from Canada West (Calgary) requires the us. geographic profile.

Access supports OpenAI Responses API, OpenAI Chat Completions API and Amazon Bedrock Converse API. The listed models support a context window of one million tokens, reasoning mode, tool calling and prompt caching. According to AWS, the broader capacity of the target regions may help maintain throughput during peaks. Configuration details can be found in the source article.

What changed

Why it matters

Application developers in Canadian regions gain access to the listed models without having to manage routing between regions themselves. For organizations with data residency requirements, profile selection is crucial: the described us. profile does not guarantee processing exclusively in Canada.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

A developer can call the listed models from a Canadian region through three supported APIs and use tool calling and a one-million-token context window.

What to do Before integration, check the active profiles for the selected model and source region in the console or using AWS CLI.
More practical updates →
02

For a business

Company policies on data residency and access permissions must cover the target regions of the selected profile. According to the source, all target regions of that profile must be allowed for a call to succeed.

Risks and compliance
What to decide Before deployment, compare the target regions of the selected profile with your company policies on data residency and access permissions.
