AWS guide shows how to progressively convert agent responses into speech using Kokoro-82M

only one source so far

AWS described a deployment of the Kokoro-82M model in Amazon SageMaker AI that converts responses from a voice agent into speech one sentence at a time. Synthesis can therefore begin before the entire text response is complete.

AWS has published an implementation guide for progressively converting responses from a voice AI agent into speech. Each completed sentence is immediately passed to the Kokoro-82M model. According to AWS, this can shorten the wait for playback to begin compared with a solution that starts synthesis only after the entire response has been generated.

The Kokoro-82M model has 82 million parameters and, in the solution described, runs in a custom container on an ml.g5.xlarge GPU instance in Amazon SageMaker AI. The container provides a POST /invocations endpoint for a single complete input and a bidirectional WebSocket connection for multiple messages within one session. Two CLI tools using AWS CDK deploy the model first, followed by an agent built with Strands that runs in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore.

The guide also addresses specific implementation issues: receiving binary messages over WebSocket, keeping the connection open between sentences, and sending the final text even without terminal punctuation. Sentences are still processed sequentially: synthesis of the next sentence starts only after the previous one is complete. The benefit is therefore an earlier start to the first sentence, rather than concurrent synthesis of multiple sentences.

What changed

Why it matters

The guide provides a concrete architecture for voice agents whose users wait for longer responses to be spoken. The benefit depends on the time gap between generation of the first and last sentences; the procedure described does not in itself demonstrate specific time or cost savings.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

Developers get a procedure for handling WebSocket connections, including an error in which receiving a binary message fails even though the deployed service continues to report an InService status.

What to do When validating the implementation, test receipt of a binary message over WebSocket and audio delivery, rather than checking only the status of the deployed service.

02

For a business

A company running voice AI agents can assess whether voice responses can start sooner, but its deployment design must account for hosting the model on a GPU instance and running the agent in a separate environment.

Development
What to decide In a pilot deployment, measure the wait for the first audio in multi-sentence responses and the operating costs of the infrastructure described.
