Apple opens up Siri AI to third-party developers in iOS 27.3
In iOS 27.3 (Developer Preview), Apple allows third-party developers to integrate Siri AI into all apps. The assistant uses personal context and on-screen awareness, and a new "app skills" feature combines multiple tasks into a single action.
In the iOS 27.3 update, which is being rolled out as a Developer Preview, Apple is opening up Siri AI to third-party developers. According to the company, developers will be able to integrate the new Siri AI features into "all apps" – the assistant will be able to use the user's personal context, process requests in natural language, and evaluate the content of the currently displayed screen (on-screen awareness) to fulfill requests.
Part of the update is a new "app skills" feature, which developers can create within their app and which combines multiple steps into a single action. According to Apple's documentation, the user won't need to mention the app's name if the app is currently in the foreground, has a Live Activity running, or if the user has just been talking about it with Siri AI. Apple cites as an example ordering a ride through a ride-hailing app, where the pickup address can then be changed just by saying "Hey Siri, change my ride pickup to a new address." According to the article, 9to5Mac noted that Apple had previously made only a smaller set of features available to developers.
At the same time, Apple is also expanding these Siri AI capabilities in 14 of its own apps, including Calendar, Files, Finder, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts, and Weather. According to the company, users will thus be able to, for example, find a café they visited last week, or archive files that haven't been opened in over a year. Users can ask Siri AI in each app what it can do.
Why it matters
For users, this means more convenient voice control across apps without having to remember exact names or procedures. For app developers, it's a new way to offer voice-controlled features, but it requires integrating the new interface, which is still in the Developer Preview stage.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
iPhone users will be able to issue Siri AI requests across third-party apps without having to name the specific app every time – it will be enough to talk about the task they're currently handling (e.g. changing a pickup address in a ride-hailing app), provided the app is active or the user has just been communicating about it with Siri AI.
For a business
iOS app developers are getting a new API that lets them bring Siri AI into their products – the assistant will be able to perform actions directly within their app using personal context and on-screen awareness, and combine multiple steps into a single "app skills" command.
