Apple is adding an AI assistant to Pages, Keynote and Numbers. It uses models from Apple and OpenAI. According to Apple, it understands the context of the document and helps design, animate and edit presentation slides in Keynote.
In Pages, according to Apple, it can draft text, restructure it and edit content. In Numbers, it is intended to perform calculations, visualize and organize data, recommend chart types and create custom tables. All three applications now also support Model Context Protocol (MCP), which enables connections to external AI agents. This support requires macOS 27 or later.
Why it matters
The assistant offers help with specific tasks directly within a document in progress. MCP support also opens these applications to external AI agents, but its use depends on the operating system version.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
When writing text or preparing a presentation, individuals can use the assistant to edit content in the context of the document, as Apple describes this capability.
For a business
Teams using these office applications gain the ability to connect external AI agents to their workflows via MCP. When planning an integration, they must account for the requirement for macOS 27 or later.
