Anthropic is transferring governance of the Agent Skills standard to Agentic AI Foundation under Linux Foundation. The transfer includes the name, logo, organization on GitHub and agentskills.io domain. According to the company, more than 70 platforms have integrated the standard.
On 22 October 2026, Anthropic announced the transfer of the open Agent Skills standard to Agentic AI Foundation, which operates under Linux Foundation. The transfer includes the name and logo of the standard, the organization on GitHub and the agentskills.io domain. The stated goal is community-driven development and independence from a single vendor.
The Agent Skills standard provides AI agents with specialized knowledge and workflows through folders containing a SKILL.md file, optionally accompanied by scripts and reference materials. According to Anthropic, more than 70 platforms have integrated it since its release in December 2025, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code. The company reports one million published skill packages and nearly 280 million installations.
Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies are to contribute to maintaining the standard in an individual capacity. Neither using the standard nor contributing requires foundation membership. Anthropic has proposed a roadmap covering versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security recommendations for skill package authors and users; this remains a proposal for how to proceed.
Why it matters
For teams building workflows around the Agent Skills standard, governance of the shared specification is changing. According to Anthropic, the foundation is intended to give the community greater influence over its development. The proposed release rules and security recommendations may be significant for integration planning, but have not yet been announced as established requirements.
