Amazon launches text-based shopping agent Alexa for Shopping in the US

confirmed by 2 independent sources

Amazon has introduced a text interface for Alexa for Shopping: selected US users can shop on Amazon by sending messages describing or showing a photo of a product. The rollout is starting with a small group and will expand to millions more users in the coming weeks.

Amazon has launched a new text feature for Alexa for Shopping, allowing users to order products by sending text messages describing what they want to buy, or a photo of the item in question. Alexa for Shopping processes the message, searches for matching listings on Amazon, sends back a recommendation, and completes the order once confirmed. The contact appears on the phone as "Amazon Alexa" and can be used, for example, to buy weekly groceries, find gifts, or search for similar goods based on a photographed piece of clothing. According to the company, the assistant gradually remembers the user's preferences over time (e.g. vegan variants) and can track prices and notify the user when an item drops in price.

The feature builds on Alexa for Shopping, which Amazon launched in May 2026. The rollout started selectively with a small group of American users, who receive a text prompt to try it out; according to the company, it will expand to "millions more" users in the coming weeks. The launch is timed shortly before the start of the holiday shopping season. Users without an invitation can sign up for a waitlist.

The move comes after Amazon blocked Meta's shopping agent Muse from accessing its website in September. Other companies are also introducing text-based shopping with AI agents — OpenAI launched text communication with its personal agent Dot last month, and DoorDash introduced text-based food ordering via the Ask DoorDash agent in September. DoorDash stated that independent third-party AI agents have so far brokered only a few hundred orders in total on its platform.

What changed

Why it matters

For consumers, this is a further simplification of shopping — just send a message or photo and the assistant will search for and order the item, without needing to open the app. For merchants and companies selling through Amazon, it's important to monitor how purchasing decisions are shifting toward AI agents, as this may affect how product listings are displayed and selected in a conversational interface, while also illustrating the broader trend of competing text-based shopping agents (OpenAI, DoorDash).
