Karpathy built the recommendation websites HackerTube and TristanTube over a weekend using Claude models
Andrej Karpathy built the HackerTube website over a weekend using the Claude Opus 5.5 model, which filtered 43 million Hacker News comments into 6454 videos, and the TristanTube website with 47 000 videos, which the Claude Code tool "one-shotted" in three minutes.
Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI and, according to the source, now a researcher at Anthropic, built the HackerTube website over a weekend with the help of the Claude Opus 5.5 model. The model filtered 43 million comments from twenty years of Hacker News history and reduced them to 6454 videos that are repeatedly recommended on the forum. According to Karpathy, the resulting browsing experience is "noticeably better" than YouTube's own recommendation system. The site does not require login, and instead of optimized thumbnails it displays a single frame from the middle of the video, storing state locally in the browser.
Shortly afterward, Karpathy used the same approach to create TristanTube, which, in his words, he "one-shotted" with the Claude Code tool in three minutes. It contains 47 000 videos from a list of YouTube channels compiled by Tristan Hume.
Karpathy states that Claude Code handled almost all the work on its own - from data analysis to server setup. His own contribution was only handling the Google Cloud API key, renting the server, and buying the domain. Projects that would previously have taken weeks thus took only a few hours, according to him.
Why it matters
The case specifically demonstrates how quickly a large volume of data can be processed and a functional website deployed using the Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Code tools - tasks that would otherwise take weeks of development here took hours to minutes. For developers, this is a practical example of the scope of independent work that today's AI assistants can handle without detailed supervision.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
It shows that an individual can use the Claude Opus 5.5 model together with the Claude Code tool to build a functional web application (filtering tens of millions of data items, deploying a server) in hours to minutes, with the model handling almost all the technical work while the person only dealt with the API key, renting a server, and the domain.
For a business
The case shows what Claude Code is capable of when handling technical work independently, from data analysis to server deployment - relevant as evidence of possible acceleration of prototype development, but it is not a corporate decision or deployment.
