Google to limit model choice in the Gemini Free and Plus plans
From 9 October, Google will limit the Gemini Free plan to Flash-Lite and cap the Plus plan at Flash. The change also affects free use on mobile; access to more advanced models is expected to require payment.
According to the first source article, Google will change model availability in the two lowest Gemini tiers from 9 October. The Free plan will offer only Flash-Lite, whose current version the article identifies as 3.5. The paid Plus plan will offer models up to Flash.
Until now, both plans have also provided access to more advanced models. The second article describes restrictions on free access in the Gemini mobile product as already being rolled out and says that more advanced models will require payment. For the Plus plan, the first article lists a price of 150 or 300 Kč. Details can be found in the source article.
Why it matters
Users on the lowest tiers will have a narrower choice of models for complex queries. When deciding on a subscription, a key consideration is that even the paid Plus plan will have model access capped at Flash.
