Apple opens Siri AI to third-party developers in iOS 27.3

Apple is opening Siri AI to third-party developers in the iOS 27.3 update, which is being rolled out as a Developer Preview. According to the company, developers will be able to integrate new Siri AI features into "all apps" – the assistant will be able to use the user's personal context, process requests in natural language, and evaluate the content of the currently displayed screen (on-screen awareness) to fulfill requests.
The update includes a new "app skills" feature, which developers can create within an app and which combines multiple steps into a single action. According to Apple's documentation, users will not need to mention the app's name if the app is currently in the foreground, has a Live Activity running, or if the user has just been talking about it with Siri AI. Apple gives the example of booking a ride through a ride-hailing app, where the pickup address can then be changed just by saying "Hey Siri, change my ride pickup to a new address." According to the article, 9to5Mac noted that Apple had previously made only a smaller set of features available to developers.
At the same time, Apple is also extending these Siri AI capabilities to its own 14 apps, including Calendar, Files, Finder, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts, and Weather. According to the company, this will allow users to, for example, find a café they visited last week or archive files that haven't been opened for over a year. Users can ask Siri AI in each app what it can do.
Why it matters
For users, this means more convenient voice control across apps without having to remember exact names or procedures. For app developers, it is a new way to offer voice-controlled features, but it requires integrating the new interface, which is currently still in the Developer Preview stage.

Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
iPhone users will be able to issue Siri AI requests across third-party apps without having to name the specific app every time – it is enough to talk about the task they are currently handling (e.g., changing a pickup address in a ride-hailing app), provided the app in question is active or the user is currently talking to Siri AI about it.
For a business
iOS app developers are getting a new API that lets them integrate Siri AI into their products – thanks to personal context and on-screen awareness, the assistant will be able to perform actions directly within their app and combine multiple steps into a single "app skills" command.
