Shares in MongoDB fell by 17 % after its CEO Chirantan Desai left to lead the new Meta Enterprise Platform. The unit builds on the Muse agent and is intended to sell AI tools to businesses; Meta has not yet announced pricing or exactly how it will work.
Shares in MongoDB fell by more than 17 % on Monday after the company announced the sudden departure of its CEO Chirantan “CJ" Desai, who is moving to Meta to lead its new business pillar, Meta Enterprise Platform. MongoDB temporarily appointed Dev Ittycheria, who previously held the role, as CEO while the board searches for a permanent replacement. According to Meta, the initiative is intended to compete with tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and inexpensive Chinese open-weight models; according to Wall Street Journal, Meta is investing more than 100 billion USD in AI infrastructure this year, and investors expect a return. Meta has not yet disclosed pricing or exactly how the platform will work.
Meta Enterprise Platform was announced as a new business pillar of the company focused on selling AI tools to businesses and developers. It builds on technologies introduced earlier in September, particularly the personal assistant Muse, and the offering is intended to include the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code. According to Mark Zuckerberg, Meta intends to use advantages in this segment that other companies do not have — advanced models, agents, extensive infrastructure and years of working with hundreds of millions of businesses through advertising platforms.
Chirantan Desai was appointed to lead the unit as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer, reporting directly to Zuckerberg. Desai previously led product and engineering at Cloudflare and spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, including as president and COO. According to his statement, security and privacy will be part of enterprise products from Meta from the start.
Why it matters
The departure of an established CEO of the database company MongoDB to a direct competitor in enterprise software signals that Meta is serious about entering enterprise AI and is willing to pay the staffing cost of bringing in senior leaders from other companies. The market for developer and enterprise AI tools is gaining a strong player with enormous investment resources, which may influence the pricing and range of competing products in the future, although the specific terms of the Meta platform are not yet known.

Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Developers using tools such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor may face a new competing offering from Meta in the form of Muse Code in the future, although details and pricing are still missing.
For a business
Companies considering providers of enterprise AI tools are gaining another major player with massive investment in infrastructure; at the same time, the sudden departure of the CEO showed investors in MongoDB the risk associated with losing key leadership, which was reflected in a sharp drop in the share price.
