Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs are launching an AI platform for remixing music from the UMG catalogue

only one source so far

Universal Music Group has signed a multi-year licensing agreement with ElevenLabs for an AI platform to create remixes and mashups from its music catalogue; participation by individual artists will be voluntary.

Universal Music Group (UMG) is launching a new AI platform where users will be able to use the licensed catalogue of the label to create remixes, mashups and new versions of tracks. It is developing the platform through a multi-year licensing partnership with ElevenLabs, a company specialising in AI voice and music generation.

According to the announcement, artists will be able to decide for themselves whether to participate in the platform. This is another in a series of AI agreements involving the UMG label – the company is also developing a separate AI music project with Udio and has signed AI licensing agreements with Spotify and Nvidia.

The sources do not specify a launch date for the platform, its price or technical details of how the system works.

What changed

Why it matters

The agreement shows how AI music tools can operate using licensed content with the consent of both the label and individual artists, instead of running into copyright disputes. For fans, this means a legal opportunity to remix tracks by selected artists; for the industry, it sets a precedent for further similar partnerships between labels and AI companies.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

Fans and content creators will be able to legally create remixes and mashups of songs from UMG, but only for artists who voluntarily join the programme.

What to do Check whether your favourite artists from the UMG catalogue will join the programme if you are interested in using the AI platform.

02

For a business

The agreement demonstrates a model in which an AI company gains legal access to the catalogue of a major music label through a multi-year licence instead of a copyright dispute, changing the way AI companies can commercially use protected content.
