The company Fountain 0 has released the 2.5-hour AI-generated film Odysseus: The Fall, which it describes as the first “Hollywood" AI blockbuster. The review by The Verge describes frequent errors: changing character dimensions, mouths out of sync, bending oars, and incorrect pronunciation of names. Rental costs 9.99 USD.

The company Fountain 0 has released Odysseus: The Fall, a feature-length adaptation of the Odyssey by Homer created entirely using AI. The screenplay and direction are handled by company co-founder Ash Koosha, who also provided his likeness for the title character and created the music for the film. According to the company, it is the “first fully AI-generated film created at the level of a Hollywood blockbuster". The studio previously created the short AI film Dreams of Violets, which was screened at the Tribeca festival.

The review by The Verge describes a range of technical shortcomings that repeatedly distracted the reviewer while watching the 2.5-hour film. The height of the cyclops who captures Odysseus and his men changes between shots, waves move in the opposite direction to the wind, the movements of the characters’ mouths do not match the spoken words (sometimes they move even without any sound), oars bend and twist during rowing, and in one scene, one of the ships in the fleet inexplicably moves sideways. According to the review, the names Odysseus and Zeus are pronounced incorrectly, a sword turns into a dagger in one shot without explanation, and in another scene, a corpse resembling an alien is roasted on a spit.

The film is available to rent for 9.99 USD and, according to the reviewer, can only be watched through a web browser, so he had to mirror the video from his phone to watch it on a television. The reviewer also states that current AI models can generate only shots lasting a few seconds, which he says leads to fragmented storytelling without sufficient context — for example, information about the suitors of Penelope does not appear in the film until almost the end.

The review assesses the film very negatively overall, also questioning the company’s claim that its motivation was a long-standing fondness for the epic by Homer and suggesting that the product instead capitalizes on the interest generated by the recent live-action adaptation of the Odyssey by Christopher Nolan.

What changed

Why it matters

The film demonstrates specific limitations of current AI video generation in long-form narratives: according to the review, problems persist with the consistency of characters and environments between shots, synchronization of speech with mouth movements, and the physical plausibility of movement. This is relevant both to those interested in AI video technology and to companies in media and marketing considering using similar tools for content production — the case suggests that a complete replacement for traditional production is not yet realistic according to one reviewer.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

For those interested in the state of AI-generated video, the film serves as a concrete example of what a fully AI-generated feature-length production looks like in practice and what errors (inconsistencies, poor synchronization, incorrect pronunciation) appear in it according to the review.

02

For a business

The case shows companies considering using AI-generated video for content production that major consistency problems persist in long-form narratives (character heights, lip sync, movement physics), which, according to the review by The Verge, make the result unusable for professional production.
