The Claude Science product coordinated agents to create an ultraviolet map of the entire sky
The Claude Science product coordinated AI agents that combined data from space missions and reconstructed missing regions of an ultraviolet sky map. According to the project description, predictions differed from measurements by an average of approximately 10 % in tests. The map is intended for teaching.
The Claude Science product from Anthropic coordinated AI agents to assemble an ultraviolet map of the entire sky. Astrophysicist Brice Ménard from Johns Hopkins described a workflow on the Anthropic website in which agents downloaded data from several space missions, calibrated them and combined them. They filled gaps using a technique called inpainting, in which a model reconstructs missing regions based on existing data. According to this account, the average deviation of predictions from actual measurements in tests was approximately 10 %.
The GALEX mission from NASA covered approximately two thirds of the sky but omitted bright star-forming regions. The resulting map therefore combines measured data with reconstructed regions and is intended as a teaching resource. Ménard believes that a similar approach could make other postponed projects possible; however, this is his expectation, not a demonstrated outcome of further applications.
Why it matters
The project demonstrates a specific workflow for combining incomplete scientific data: downloading, calibration, merging and reconstruction of gaps. It makes it possible to create a continuous map for teaching, but the reconstructed parts must be understood as estimates. The reported deviation of approximately 10 % describes the project tests, not guaranteed accuracy at every point on the map.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
When studying or teaching astronomy, the map may offer a continuous view of the ultraviolet sky, but some of its content comes from reconstruction rather than direct measurement.
For a business
For research teams, the project provides an example of coordinating agents to prepare data from multiple missions. It demonstrates a specific workflow but does not quantify time or cost savings for an organization.
