Superhuman buys the notetaker Fathom

only one source so far

Superhuman is acquiring the notetaker Fathom (400 thousand active users, 1 million recorded meetings) and integrating it into its AI productivity platform for work automation and AI agents.

Superhuman announced the acquisition of Fathom, a notetaker for recording and processing meetings backed by the accelerator Y Combinator. Fathom was founded in 2020, raised over 30 million dollars from investors including Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, BoxOne Ventures and Maven Ventures, and reached a valuation of 94 million dollars in 2024. Its investors also include individuals such as Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear and Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt. Fathom says that thanks to its generous free plan, it has over 400 thousand monthly active users, and over a million people have recorded a meeting with it to date.

According to Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra, the company first tested its own internal notetaker with selected users but ultimately decided to buy an existing product. Mehrotra said the testing increased the company's confidence in demand for this category of tools, but also showed how challenging it is to build a high-quality notetaker across every part of the meeting recording process. He did not specify which technical elements of Fathom appealed to the company.

Fathom CEO Richard White explained the rationale for the acquisition by pointing out that Superhuman has 40 million users, which will allow Fathom to scale faster than if it remained independent and had to build its own infrastructure that Superhuman already has – an email client, a document app, a calendar, a database solution and a recently launched platform for creating AI agents. According to the article, the market for meeting notetakers is highly competitive, with players such as Granola, Read AI and newcomer Wispr, which have also received significant investment.

What changed

Why it matters

For Fathom users, the acquisition means integration into the broader Superhuman platform, where, according to the company, the tool should be able to connect context from meetings with other tasks in real time – such as drafting emails, updating database records or scheduling follow-up meetings. For the notetaker market, it signals that standalone startups in this category face pressure to join larger productivity platforms because, according to the Superhuman CEO, building a fully fledged product is more technically challenging than it seems.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

Fathom users can expect the product to be gradually incorporated into the broader Superhuman platform with email, a calendar and AI agents, which may change how the tool currently operates as a standalone product.

02

For a business

Companies offering standalone meeting notetaker tools face pressure to consolidate with larger productivity platforms because building a fully fledged product in this category is technically challenging, and distribution determines the ability to scale.
