Snap bans purely AI-generated videos from Spotlight recommendations

only one source so far

Starting in August 2026, Snap is excluding purely AI-generated videos from recommendations in the Spotlight section. Videos edited using the built-in AI tools in Snapchat remain permitted, but will carry transparency labels.

Starting this month, Snap is excluding purely AI-generated videos from recommendations in the Spotlight section. According to the company, this move is intended to curb the spread of "low-quality, repetitive AI content" and keep Spotlight focused on "authentic creativity from real people".

Videos edited using the built-in AI tools in Snapchat remain permitted, but will now carry a transparency label. The distinction is therefore between content created entirely by artificial intelligence, which loses eligibility for recommendations, and content where AI served only as an editing tool within Snapchat itself.

The company also stated that the number of contributors to Spotlight grew by more than 120 percent, but did not specify how much AI-generated content contributed to this increase.

What changed

Why it matters

The rules of the game are changing for creators publishing on Snapchat Spotlight: content created entirely using AI generators will no longer be recommended by the system, while content edited with native AI tools in Snapchat will, but with a visible label. Companies and brands using Spotlight for marketing should check whether their content falls into the category that is losing reach.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

Content creators on Snapchat Spotlight who publish purely AI-generated videos will lose eligibility for recommendations; content created or edited using the built-in AI tools in Snapchat may remain visible, but will be labeled as AI-edited.

What to do Check whether your own videos on Spotlight are purely AI-generated and, if necessary, edit them using the built-in AI tools in Snapchat so that they remain eligible for recommendations.

02

For a business

Companies and brands using Snapchat Spotlight to promote content must distinguish purely AI-generated videos (which lose eligibility for recommendations) from content edited with native AI tools in Snapchat (which remains eligible, but with a transparency label) to avoid losing organic reach.
