Shopify opens up checkout to AI agents in the browser

only one source so far

Shopify has extended the WebMCP protocol with checkout, so AI agents in the browser (e.g. Muse, Instinct) can, after authorization by the buyer, also complete the entire purchase on Shopify stores, including payment via Shop Pay.

Shopify has extended the WebMCP protocol with support for the checkout process, thereby enabling AI agents running directly in the buyer's browser to complete purchases on stores built on the Shopify platform. Until now, WebMCP on the Shopify platform only covered product search and adding items to the cart; agents can now read the content of the checkout screen, modify the address or shipping method, and, after authorization by the buyer, also submit the order, including payment via Shop Pay. According to the company, this is a structured approach that does not require screenshots or web scraping.

The update introduces three new tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. The feature is being gradually rolled out to all eligible merchants on the Shopify platform. Both WebMCP for browser agents and the previously introduced hosted MCP server for server-to-server communication build on Shopify's shared Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which defines a unified way of searching products, assembling the cart, and completing the purchase.

According to the source, the AI agents Muse and Instinct have direct partnerships with Shopify for agentic commerce, with the partnership with Instinct announced on the same day as the WebMCP expansion. The source notes that other retailers, specifically Amazon and Adidas, are instead blocking AI agents from making purchases on their platforms — with this move, Shopify is heading in the opposite direction.

What changed

Why it matters

For merchants on the Shopify platform, a new sales channel is opening up — purchases completed directly by AI agents without the need to go through the classic web interface, which could affect conversions as well as requirements for structured product data. For consumers, this means that AI shopping agents can now complete the entire ordering process (address, shipping, payment) themselves, albeit still with explicit buyer authorization for the specific transaction.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

Users of AI shopping agents such as Muse or Instinct will be able to let the agent complete the entire purchase on Shopify stores with their authorization, instead of having to finish the order manually themselves.

What to do When confirming a purchase via an AI agent in the browser, check the address, shipping, and amount before granting authorization.

02

For a business

Online stores running on the Shopify platform are gaining the ability to let AI agents in the browser complete orders, including via Shop Pay, which changes the previous model where agents had to navigate pages designed for humans or work through scraping.
