Publishers introduce „written by a human" certifications after AI literature scandals

only one source so far

A study by Villanova University found that readers cannot distinguish shorter AI-written texts from human-written ones and often rate them as more readable. Following the withdrawal of the novel by Jerry Falade (Macmillan) and the cancellation of the book by Mia Ballard (Hachette Book), publishers are introducing Human Authored certifications.

According to a study by Villanova University, highlighted by the business newsletter 11am and picked up by E15.cz, readers can no longer reliably distinguish shorter texts written by generative artificial intelligence from human-written texts. Readers also often rate AI texts as more readable and of higher quality than human-written ones – paradoxically, especially when they believe the work was written by a human.

The problem has also surfaced in specific cases. Call Me, I'll Hide the Body, the debut novel by Nigerian author Jerry Falade, was withdrawn by his own agents after serious doubts arose about whether the manuscript was entirely his own work; as a result, the author lost a contract with Macmillan worth two million dollars. According to the quoted statement the agents gave to The Guardian, they were unable to verify how the text had actually been created from start to finish.

Another case is the horror novel Shy Girl by Mia Ballard, whose publication was canceled in March by Hachette Book after discussion forums and literary influencers drew attention to repetitive and unnatural sentence structure. An analysis using a specialized detection program subsequently also questioned the originality of the text, and Hachette therefore halted publication in the USA and withdrew the book from the British market, citing the contractual obligation for authors to guarantee one hundred percent originality of their work. Ballard denied using AI and blamed the editor she had worked with.

In response to these cases, publishers and authors' associations are introducing stricter checks on the origin of texts and certifications such as Human Authored, intended to guarantee readers that a book is one hundred percent human-written. The source also mentions watermarking by Anthropic for texts generated by Claude models, but the source article does not elaborate on this or other aspects of the topic.

What changed

Why it matters

For readers, this means losing confidence that a work they have paid for is actually the result of human creativity – the study shows that they cannot determine this themselves. For authors and publishers, contractual and financial risks are increasing: an undocumented origin of a text can lead to a contract being canceled or a book being withdrawn from the market, as the cases of Falade and Ballard show, and Human Authored certification is intended to serve as a tool to reduce this risk.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

Authors signing contracts with major publishers may face stricter requirements to document the originality of their work (drafts, timestamps, notes), because, according to the source, readers cannot distinguish shorter AI texts from human-written ones, and publishers use these requirements to protect themselves contractually and legally.

What to do Authors signing contracts with publishers can check in advance whether they require documentation of how the text was created (drafts, timestamps, notes).

02

For a business

Publishers bear financial and legal risks: according to the source, Macmillan lost a manuscript with a contract worth two million dollars because the origin of the text could not be verified, and Hachette Book withdrew a published title after both the public and detection software questioned its originality.

Risks and compliance
What to decide Publishers and publishing houses can add a requirement to their contracts with authors to document how the text was created (drafts, timestamps) and consider introducing Human Authored certification.
