Pixel-art kakapo animation created with the Claude Opus 5.5 model and converted into video using Claude Code and Playwright

Simon Willison generated a pixel-art animation of a kakapo party in HTML5 canvas using the Claude Opus 5.5 model, and using Claude Code with a Playwright script converted it into a 15-second video for a slide at the WeAreDevelopers keynote.

Independent LLM scene commentator Simon Willison described how he created an animated slide featuring a kakapo parrot party for the closing keynote at the WeAreDevelopers World Congress North America. He fed the Claude Opus 5.5 model three kakapo photos from Google Image Search and prompted it to create an animated pixel-art scene in HTML5 canvas with at least 20 jumping kakapos and confetti. According to the author, the model handled the generated page very well on the first attempt.

He then downloaded the resulting HTML page and handed it to a local Claude Code session with instructions to turn it into a 15-second video, including several scheduled clicks on the canvas that would trigger a confetti effect. Claude Code generated and ran a short Playwright script for this, which opened the page in a headless Chromium browser, performed ten clicks at various points on the screen at precisely set times, and recorded the whole sequence as a video in 1280×720 format.

The author used the resulting video directly as the final slide of his presentation. The source also includes the complete source code of the Playwright script.

What changed

Why it matters

It shows a concrete, easily repeatable approach for turning a single prompt to the Claude model into functional animated HTML5 canvas graphics, and then converting it into a finished video without manual screen recording, using the Claude Code tool and a Playwright automation script. For creating presentations, demo scenes, or short promotional clips, this offers a quick alternative to traditional graphics and video software.

For individuals

Anyone creating presentations can use this approach to quickly produce a short animated video from HTML5 canvas content without using a video editor or graphics tool.

What to do Try a similar approach – generate an animation in HTML5 canvas using the Claude model and then convert it into a video via a Playwright script through Claude Code for your own presentation.
