Outage of Azure OpenAI and Azure AI Foundry services in the Sweden Central region

clearly official source

Microsoft has been reporting intermittent request errors, increased latency, and HTTP 5XX errors since 10:00 UTC on 29 September 2026 for the Azure OpenAI, Foundry Agent Service, Foundry Models, and Cognitive Services services in the Sweden Central region. Following intervention, the situation is improving, and the investigation continues.

Microsoft has been tracking issues since 10:00 UTC on 29 September 2026 affecting a subset of customers using Azure OpenAI Service, Foundry Agent Service, Foundry Models, and Cognitive Services in the Sweden Central region. These manifest as intermittent request failures, increased latency, and HTTP 5XX error codes for models and APIs hosted in this region.

According to Microsoft, initial findings show that the problem was caused by a backend service used to load metadata when processing requests for the given region — this service experienced timeouts reading from the database and caching layers it depends on, and some instances became unresponsive and restarted. Because of this, requests dependent on these processes were delayed or intermittently failed.

As a mitigation, Microsoft increased the number of backend service instances and reconfigured system processes, processed the backlog of requests, and is now monitoring whether overall service health is improving. Investigation into the health of the supporting platform infrastructure and system processes that may have caused the incident is ongoing; the company was due to provide a further update within 60 minutes of this report's release or sooner depending on how the situation develops.

What changed

Why it matters

The incident directly affects customers running applications with models through Azure OpenAI or Azure AI Foundry in the Sweden Central region — for them, it could mean outages or slowdowns in production integrations. For other users of Azure AI services in other regions, there is no immediate impact, but it highlights the risk associated with running AI services with a single provider and a single region.
