OpenAI adds voice-controlled agentic features to the ChatGPT mobile app

OpenAI is adding voice-controlled agentic features to the ChatGPT mobile app — Plus and Pro users can use voice in the Work tab to create documents, write emails, or summarize Slack messages, with continuity between mobile and desktop.

OpenAI announced it is bringing voice-controlled agentic features to the ChatGPT mobile app. Users with a Plus or Pro subscription can use voice in the Work tab on their phone to create a document, write an email, or summarize Slack messages. According to OpenAI, these users also have access to other features, such as creating websites and presentations, using the cloud browser, or working with financial data in the ChatGPT app. Users on the Free and Go plans will get access to plugins and connected apps.

According to OpenAI, voice conversations in ChatGPT will have richer text output, and users will be able to easily switch between text and voice mode. A conversation started on mobile can be finished on a computer. The new feature builds on the GPT-Live model, which OpenAI launched in July and subsequently integrated into the desktop app for voice control of the Work and Codex tabs; similar capabilities are now coming to the mobile app as well.

The source notes that Anthropic recently made it easier to move between the mobile and desktop app and merged the Cowork and Chat interfaces, while OpenAI continues to keep chat and the workspace in the ChatGPT app separate.

What changed

Why it matters

For individual users, this means being able to assign work tasks by voice directly from a phone (e.g., while on the go) and seamlessly continue on a computer, which can speed up routine tasks like writing emails or summarizing messages. For companies, it is a signal of growing competition between OpenAI and Anthropic in voice-controlled work tools and agents integrated into everyday communication (Slack, documents, presentations) — the two companies' differing approaches to linking chat and workspace could influence the choice of tool for enterprise deployment.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

Users with a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription can use voice in the mobile app to assign work tasks (writing emails, documents, summarizing messages) and seamlessly finish an in-progress conversation on a computer.

02

For a business

Companies whose employees use the ChatGPT app for work are getting a tool for voice-assigning tasks (creating documents, emails, summarizing Slack communication, creating websites and presentations) directly from a mobile phone with continuity to desktop, while OpenAI, unlike competitor Anthropic, keeps the chat and work-task interfaces separate.

Productivity
What to decide Verify whether voice control for the Work tab in the ChatGPT app (documents, emails, Slack summaries) simplifies the team's workflows, within the existing Plus or Pro subscription.
