OpenAI acquired smartphone camera technology developer Glass Imaging
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI acquired Glass Imaging, which uses AI to improve photos from smartphone cameras, for more than $300 million. OpenAI has not yet confirmed the transaction.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI acquired Glass Imaging for more than $300 million. Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 in Los Altos, California, and has raised approximately $30 million from investors to date. OpenAI has not yet commented on the report.
Glass Imaging was founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, former engineers at Apple who previously led the team developing Portrait Mode. The company uses neural networks that learn the characteristics of the specific cameras in individual smartphone models, improving image quality as soon as the shutter is pressed, unlike an approach in which a photo is edited only after it has been taken.
According to available information, OpenAI is working on its own hardware, including phones, headphones and AI companion devices. In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and designer Jony Ive announced a joint device project called io, which OpenAI acquired for $6.5 billion.
Why it matters
The acquisition suggests that OpenAI is building its own technological capabilities for image processing with a view to its planned in-house hardware, such as phones, headphones or AI companion devices. For the industry, this is further evidence that, following its acquisition of the startup io for $6.5 billion, OpenAI is moving toward manufacturing physical devices, not just software.

What this means
For a business
The acquisition demonstrates that OpenAI is building its own expertise in processing images from cameras for its upcoming hardware instead of licensing technology from third parties, which is a relevant signal for companies monitoring competition in the AI device market.
