Neurona Lab obtains ISO 13485 certification for developing AI tools to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease

Startup Neurona Lab has obtained ISO 13485 certification, confirming the quality of its processes for developing medical AI tools. This is the first step towards European MDR certification for the Neurona PET tool for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease.

Czech health technology startup Neurona Lab has obtained ISO 13485 certification, confirming that the company has established the processes, quality system and working practices needed to develop medical devices. The certification does not cover a specific algorithm, but the entire system that enables the company to develop and monitor the technology and offer it as a regulated product in the future. According to Jan Pavlík, co-founder and CEO of Neurona Lab, this is “the first major step towards European MDR certification and also proof that our processes operate at a top level”.

Neurona Lab develops technologies for diagnosing and treating neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease. One of its main projects is the Neurona PET tool, which the company clinically validated this year in collaboration with doctors from Fakultní nemocnice Motol and Nemocnice Na Homolce, demonstrating, according to the company, that the technology works on clinical data.

Neurona Lab is part of the Channel Lab group, founded by David Navrátil. The group is building a neurological care system that identifies disease using the earliest changes caused by the disease, which people themselves cannot detect. The group’s activities also include a mobile app focused on this area.

What changed

Why it matters

ISO 13485 certification does not in itself approve a specific diagnostic algorithm, but it is a necessary process prerequisite for medical AI tools to go through MDR regulation in Europe and move from research into routine clinical practice. For the field, this signals that a Czech health technology project is moving closer to actual deployment in hospitals, although the sources do not give a specific date for MDR approval or the deployment of Neurona PET.

Relevant practical impact

What this means

01

For a business

ISO 13485 certification is a process requirement for developing regulated medical devices and a preliminary step towards MDR certification, without which an AI diagnostic tool cannot enter routine clinical use as an officially approved product.
