Moonshot AI is in talks with Microsoft, Amazon and Google about hosting the Kimi K3 model in exchange for a share of revenue

only one source so far

Chinese company Moonshot AI is in talks with Microsoft, Amazon and Google about hosting the Kimi K3 model on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud in exchange for a share of up to 30 % of revenue. It would be the first such agreement between a Chinese AI company and a US cloud provider, but the talks are at an early stage.

Chinese AI company Moonshot AI is in talks with Microsoft, Amazon and Google (Alphabet) about revenue-sharing agreements that would allow the Kimi K3 model to be hosted on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud. According to Reuters, which cites three people familiar with the talks, Moonshot AI is seeking up to 30 percent of the revenue from services built on Kimi K3. If an agreement were reached, it would be the first such contract between a Chinese AI company and a major US cloud provider.

According to the sources, the talks are at an early stage, and an agreement is not certain. Questions about revenue sharing, data access and how to track token usage remain unresolved. Microsoft, Google and AWS did not comment to Reuters on the talks.

The talks are taking place against a backdrop of strained relations between Moonshot AI and US authorities: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently threatened the company with a trade embargo, and US authorities accused it of stealing the Fable model from Anthropic, which Moonshot AI denies.

What changed

Why it matters

The agreement would open major US cloud platforms to a Chinese AI model for the first time, making it easier for companies to deploy Kimi K3 from a legal and technical standpoint without a direct connection to a Chinese provider. At the same time, the talks are taking place in the context of political pressure on Moonshot AI from US authorities, so the outcome will also influence how similar cases involving other Chinese AI companies are handled.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

If the talks result in an agreement, developers could eventually access the Kimi K3 model through the interfaces of familiar cloud platforms instead of connecting directly to a Chinese provider, but this remains uncertain for now.

02

For a business

If an agreement were reached, companies could deploy the Kimi K3 model through standard Azure, AWS or Google Cloud infrastructure instead of connecting directly to a Chinese provider, making compliance and procurement easier; at the same time, this is a deal with heightened political risk due to the threat of a trade embargo and ongoing accusations against Moonshot AI.

Strategy
What to decide Monitor the progress of the talks and do not count on general availability of the Kimi K3 model on Azure, AWS or Google Cloud until an agreement has been reached.
