Meta's Muse app reaches 3.4 million downloads and the top spot in app stores

independently confirmed updated September 25, 2026

Meta's Muse app reached 3.4 million downloads in the first 17 days after launch (2.3–4.3 million according to other firms) and took first place in both the US App Store and Google Play. Its download growth rate significantly outpaces ChatGPT.

Meta's Muse app, launched on 8 September 2026, reached 3.4 million downloads in its first 17 days, according to estimates from Sensor Tower. Estimates from other analytics firms vary — Apptopia puts total downloads at 4.3 million (of which 2.6 million on iOS), while Appfigures reports only around 2.3 million, split nearly evenly between iOS and Android. The app took first place in the US App Store ranking on 18 September and first place in the Google Play Store on 19 September, a position it has held ever since. In the first two weeks, the number of downloads grew by an average of 55% per day, which, according to sources, significantly exceeds the pace of ChatGPT (24% per day in its first ten days) as well as the Claude and Grok apps, whose downloads actually declined after launch.

Growth was further accelerated by the Meta Connect conference, where Meta announced upcoming features — video chat with the Muse avatar, computer use support on Mac computers, integration with smart glasses, and additional partners. According to Sensor Tower, the number of daily active users rose by 27% the very day after the conference. Paid advertising, meanwhile, accounted for only 6% of impressions from launch through 19 September, according to the data — most of the growth is described as organic, driven by cross-promotion across Meta's own platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, similar to what happened earlier with Threads.

Muse is an agent powered by the Muse Spark model, which, according to Meta, runs on a dedicated virtual machine called Muse Secure VM that isolates user data; a Muse Confidential VM variant with end-to-end encryption inaccessible even to Meta itself is planned to be added later. The agent can send emails, make bookings, shop, and negotiate on the user's behalf; it retains full functionality even after the app is closed and returns to request approval for sensitive actions. Payments are handled via Stripe's Link service with purchase protection, with Shop Pay and 1Password also planned. The app is currently available only in the US and Canada; the basic version is free, and paid subscription plans are also available.

What changed

Why it matters

The number shows that demand for personal AI agents capable of acting autonomously (payments, bookings, emails) is real and growing rapidly, which is changing user expectations of AI applications in general. The distribution strategy is also noteworthy for companies — Meta demonstrated that cross-promotion across its own platforms (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) can generate massive organic growth even without large advertising spend.

02

For a business

Muse's rapid growth points to strong demand for agentic AI assistants integrated with messaging (WhatsApp) and suggests the effectiveness of cross-promotion across a company's own platforms — relevant context for companies tracking competition in the AI agent market or considering their own distribution through similar channels.
