Meta is fixing its AI glasses to make the recording LED indicator harder to cover
Meta has closed a loophole in its AI glasses that allowed the recording LED indicator to be covered after recording had started. The update now turns off the camera if the light is covered during an active recording.
Meta is introducing an update for its AI glasses intended to limit the ability to record surroundings unnoticed. According to the company, until now, if a user covered the recording LED indicator before starting a recording, the glasses would refuse to start recording. However, users discovered that simply reversing the order of the steps – starting the recording first and only then covering the light – bypassed the safeguard.
According to a post on Threads by Alex Himel, an executive responsible for wearable electronics at Meta, the upcoming update closes this loophole: if the LED indicator is covered during an ongoing recording, the camera will turn off. According to the company, the aim is to ensure that the indicator reliably alerts people nearby that photos or video are being captured for the user gallery.
Meta presents the move as a response to criticism over unwanted recording without consent of people near users of AI glasses, footage of which is circulating online according to the source.
Why it matters
For people near users of AI glasses from Meta, the risk of being recorded without their knowledge is reduced – the existing safeguard could easily be bypassed simply by covering the LED light after recording had started. For users of the glasses, this means that covering the indicator during recording will now automatically turn off the camera.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Users of Meta Ray-Ban AI glasses will no longer be able to continue recording with the LED indicator covered – after the update, the camera will turn off in this situation.
For a business
Meta is responding to criticism over recording without consent by updating the glasses software, addressing the reputational risk associated with bypassing a product safety feature.
