Hour-long outage of Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Claude API services

clearly official source

Anthropic reported approximately an hour of elevated error rates on Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and, to some extent, Claude API on 29. 9. 2026, including sign-in problems and a risk of unsaved messages. Service was restored around 14:59 UTC.

Anthropic reported elevated error rates across Claude.ai (including the desktop and mobile apps), Claude Code, Claude Cowork and, to some extent, Claude API starting at 14:00 UTC on 29 September 2026. Users experienced failing requests, errors when loading or sending conversations, and repeated prompts to sign in; according to the company, retrying a request could succeed.

The first intervention reduced error rates at approximately 14:36 UTC, but a second issue then emerged, preventing sign-in through SSO and Sign in with Apple, new conversations, voice conversations, Claude Code and Cowork sessions, purchases and file uploads. The company therefore advised users who were signed in not to sign out.

Most services were restored around 14:59 UTC, when the status changed to monitoring. The company warned that some messages sent between 14:00 and 14:59 UTC might not have been saved. The incident was formally closed at 16:27 UTC, with the company stating that services had been operating normally since restoration; the cause of the outage was not specified in the source.

What changed

Why it matters

The outage affected both individual users of the Claude product and companies that build automated or developer workflows on Claude Code, Cowork or API — for just under an hour, they could not work reliably, and some messages may have been lost. For operations that depend on these tools, this is a reminder of the risk of outages and the need to account for temporary unavailability or data loss during similar windows.
