Google makes the SynthID website available to everyone and expands detection of partner watermarks

confirmed by 2 independent sources

Google has opened SynthID.com to the public for checking images, video and audio. According to the company, the detector now also recognizes watermarks from all its partners. Checking media on the standalone website does not require using Gemini.

Google has made SynthID.com available to everyone for checking AI media. The standalone website lets users check images, video and audio without using Gemini. Previously, the tool was available for testing to selected journalists, media professionals and researchers.

The check looks for an invisible SynthID watermark embedded in pixels or the audio signal. According to Google, the detector now supports watermarks from all its partners; the previous version recognized only the Google version. TechCrunch lists OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao among the companies supporting SynthID technology. As an example of a previous gap, Ars Technica mentions images from ChatGPT that contained a SynthID watermark but were not recognized by the Google detector.

The website supports image formats including JPG, PNG, WEBP and GIF, video in MP4, MOV and WEBM formats, and audio in WAV, MP3, FLAC and other formats. The sources differ in their descriptions of the public verification options available previously: Ars Technica mentions only Gemini, while TechCrunch also mentions the Google Chrome browser. According to Google, users submit a million requests to verify content every day.

What changed

Why it matters

The public website makes checking for SynthID watermarks available to people outside the original test group. Expanded detection also allows users to check watermarked media from more providers in one place. The check covers SynthID watermarks, so its result cannot be treated as a universal way to determine the origin of any content.
