Google launches voice control for Gmail, Docs and Keep through Live features
Google is launching Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live voice modes for the Gmail, Docs and Keep mobile apps, available to paying Google AI Plus/Pro/Ultra users; they are due to arrive later for Workspace customers.
Google is launching voice assistant modes for Gmail, Docs and Keep, called Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live. Similar to Gemini Live for the chatbot, these features allow users to control apps through speech in real time, primarily for situations where they cannot type manually. The features were first introduced at the Google I/O conference in May and are now rolling out globally on mobile platforms starting today, initially in English.
Gmail Live allows users to search for information in their mailbox by voice without browsing long message threads — according to Google, users can ask a question such as “when is my child’s next school event” and the assistant will summarize the answer based on the email content and display links to the source messages in the on-screen transcript. It supports follow-up questions and interruptions mid-answer. Docs Live helps turn ideas into structured documents based on a spoken description, for example by summarizing a longer text or reworking it into a business proposal, and with user permission, it can also draw on Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web. Keep Live transcribes notes from everyday speech and, according to Google, can put them in context without requiring precise wording, for example by adding “ingredients for pesto” to a shopping list.
Availability varies by app and platform: Gmail Live runs on both iOS and Android for users on Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans. Docs Live and Keep Live are intended for Pro and Ultra plans, with Keep Live currently available only on Android, while Docs Live works on both platforms. According to Google, all three features are due to be made available to Google Workspace business customers “soon”.
Why it matters
For individuals, this is a practical tool for quickly searching email or taking notes on the go without typing on a keyboard, but it is available only through paid Google AI plans. For businesses, it is currently relevant mainly as a future prospect — the Workspace rollout has not started yet, so any decisions about using it in work processes will require waiting for full availability.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Users with the appropriate paid plan can now use their voice to search email, create documents and take notes directly in the mobile app, without having to browse manually or type text.
For a business
Businesses using Google Workspace do not yet have access to these features, but according to Google, it plans to make them available “soon” — so this is a future consideration when planning tools and licenses, not an immediate change.
