Google launches vertical AI agents for the financial and legal sectors, lagging behind competitors

Google launched Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services and Legal with more than 50 specialized skills and connectors to financial and legal systems. According to analysts, this is an effort to catch up with a trend started a year ago by Anthropic and OpenAI.

Google launched Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services and a similar version for the legal sector on Tuesday, both built on the Gemini Enterprise platform. The financial suite includes an agent managed by Google for financial research, more than 50 new specialized skills with agent instructions for financial roles and workflows, and connectors to enterprise data. The version for lawyers includes specialized skills for legal professions and connectors to specialized legal systems.

According to the article, this move by Google follows a trend started more than a year ago by competitors Anthropic and OpenAI — Anthropic released Claude for Financial Services and also offers industry plugins for finance and law in Claude Cowork, while OpenAI offers plugins across industries, including finance, on the Codex platform. Analyst David Nicholson from Futurum Group said that Google is catching up with competitors in many respects and is trying to offset this by emphasizing openness and compatibility with existing customer processes.

According to statements by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, Google presents itself as a neutral platform that does not force financial professionals into dependence on a single model or ecosystem and is secure and compliant with regulations. Nicholson counters, however, that in his view, enterprises are less concerned about vendor lock-in and more concerned about trusting that agents operate within verified guardrails — and that companies already involved in the Google ecosystem may trust Google more in this respect than standalone companies Anthropic or OpenAI. At the same time, according to the article, the Gemini model was ahead of the ChatGPT and Claude models at certain times, but competitors have since overtaken it, and the claim by Google to neutrality is challenged by its position as a major competitor in the AI race.

Sid Nag, founder and principal researcher at Tekonyx, said that the strength of Google lies not in the Gemini model itself, but in its ability to connect Gemini Enterprise through connectors to licensed financial data sources such as CoinDesk Data & Indices, Daloopa, Dun & Bradstreet and FactSet. According to Nag, the new tools show that the debate about enterprise AI is rightly shifting from model capabilities to practical deployment in a specific industry.

What changed

Why it matters

Companies in finance and law are gaining another choice among vertically focused AI platforms — alongside Claude for Financial Services from Anthropic and industry plugins from OpenAI, they now also have an offering from Google built on connectors to licensed data sources. According to analysts, this shifts vendor selection from the question of “which model is best” to the question of whose platform fits best into existing processes and data systems, changing the criteria for corporate purchasing of AI tools.
