Google introduced and launched Playground, an experimental platform for creating, playing and sharing games. It is available to users in the USA aged 18 and over. Access to game creation is rolling out gradually at different tiers based on Google One membership. The platform runs in a browser on phones and computers.

According to Google, users can create games without coding through text prompts and test them immediately. Users can start with a blank project or use ready-made prompts and guides, then use text to change the physics, rules, characters or environment. Games can be kept private, shared via a link or published in the Playground Explore gallery. Selected genres support multiplayer play, and games can include leaderboards. According to the company, published games undergo safety checks, and users can report inappropriate content.

Google plans to integrate Unity Spark, which the company says will offer more advanced game mechanics and more detailed 3D environments using Unity runtime. Unity Spark is still being tested, with a closed beta set to follow later; this integration is therefore not part of the offering currently available.

What changed

Why it matters

For people interested in creating games who have no coding experience, the platform may shorten the path from a game idea to trying it out for the first time. Sharing via a link lets users share a game with others without publishing it in the gallery. Practical use is currently limited by availability in the USA for people aged 18 and over and the gradual rollout of access to game creation based on Google One membership.
