Google introduces Student Hub in the Gemini app with Deep Research and Lens support for students
Google is adding Student Hub to the Gemini app with a study notebook, flashcards, quizzes, and integration with Deep Research and Lens. Students in the USA will get Google AI Pro free for one year; those outside the USA will get only Google AI Plus.
Google is launching a new Student Hub in the Gemini app for students ahead of the start of the school year. It is a central place for collecting materials in a study notebook and creating flashcards and practice quizzes. Study notebooks now support charts and images and can automatically add test dates and assignment deadlines to Google Calendar based on the syllabus.
The update also extends Deep Research to Gemini Live – users can request a more complex research report and then discuss the results by voice. If processing takes longer, they can close the app and lock their phone; according to the company, Gemini will notify them when the report is ready. In the coming weeks, a new Lens feature is also expected to be added to the Google mobile app, allowing users to photograph study material or a problem and get an explanation, help with complex concepts, or guidance on where a mistake occurred.
Google is also offering students in the USA a free Google AI Pro subscription for one year, including 5 TB of storage, Google Health Premium, higher Gemini usage limits, and access to Gemini across Google apps. According to the article, students outside the USA are eligible only for the somewhat more modest Google AI Plus with 400 GB of storage and lower Gemini limits.
Why it matters
Students are getting a tool that brings together research, test preparation, and explanations of study material in one place directly in the Gemini app, including spoken summaries of more extensive research and recognition of problems from a photograph. Free access for one year to Google AI Pro in the USA (or Google AI Plus elsewhere) also lowers the barrier for students to use paid Gemini features without having to pay for a subscription.
Relevant practical impact
What this means
For individuals
Students are getting a tool in the Gemini app for organizing research, creating flashcards and practice tests, generating research reports by voice through Gemini Live, and soon also explaining problems photographed using Lens.
