Google Home gets early access to an MCP server for control through AI agents
Google launched early access to an MCP server for Google Home – AI agents such as Claude, ChatGPT or Google Antigravity can control smart devices through natural language. Currently only for Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers in the USA.
On 16 September 2026, Google began rolling out early access to a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the Google Home ecosystem. The server allows any AI agent supporting MCP – according to the source, these include Claude, ChatGPT, Hermes, OpenClaw and Google Antigravity – to securely interact with smart home devices and access event history.
This lets users use natural language to have an agent summarize camera recordings, monitor activity in the home, control connected devices or create their own customized dashboard. Setup requires creating a project in Google Cloud, configuring it for Home MCP and providing the configuration details to the chosen agent, which then prompts the user to sign in and grant permissions; a detailed guide is expected to be available in Google Home Developer Center. All devices in the Google Home ecosystem are supported, including Nest cameras and doorbells, thermostats and devices compatible with "Works with Google Home" (Matter), such as smart bulbs.
According to Google, MCP support already existed in other parts of the company – in Google Cloud, data platforms, developer tools and Google Workspace – while the rollout to Google Home directly targets consumers experimenting with AI agents for everyday tasks. Access is rolling out gradually over the coming weeks, currently exclusively to subscribers to the Google Home Premium Advanced plan (20 dollars per month) in the USA, which offers longer video history, descriptive notifications, detailed alerts and search within recordings. Google has not commented on whether or when it will expand access to additional plans or markets; it is collecting feedback from early users through the Smart Home for Developers community.
Why it matters
Users of the paid Google Home Premium Advanced plan in the USA are gaining the ability to control their smart home with natural language through commonly used AI agents instead of the Google Home app. For developers and companies working with AI agents, this is further evidence that MCP is becoming established as a standard way to connect agents to real devices across products, including beyond Google.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Users on the Google Home Premium Advanced plan in the USA can now use natural language through AI agents such as Claude, ChatGPT or Google Antigravity to control Google Home devices, browse camera history and create custom dashboards.
For a business
Google is extending support for Model Context Protocol to the Google Home consumer product line, strengthening MCP as a standard for connecting AI agents to real devices and opening up opportunities for companies developing agents and integrations using this protocol.
